Low humidity, winds, and cold temperatures plus sweltering indoor heating can rapidamente turn the softest and silkiest skin into that of a crocodile’s. Well, you can kiss adios flaky, crackly and irritated piel by switching your regular body lotion for a body butter.
Body butters are ideal for this time of the year because they mix a variety of ingredients that attract and retain water inside la piel. They usually contain humectants (attract water) such as glycerin and alpha hydroxy acids as well as occlusives (trap moisture) like petrolatum, shea butter and cocoa butter. The result is a super rich, dense moisturizer that can quickly turn the driest piel into seda.

Clinique Deep Comfort Body Butter is a fragrance-free moisturizer that is great on all types of pieles but particularly for sensitive types. Burt’s Bees Therapeutic Honey & Shea Butter Body Butter smells super delicioso. This 99.01 percent natural product combines mango and shea butters with the humectant qualities of honey to create a butter treat that is not greasy. It sells for $13 at drugstores nationwide, online and here.
Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula with Vitamin E is a classic. It blends pure cocoa butter with vitamin E to moisturize, tone and soothe the dryest of skins. Bonus? It is not tested on animals. It sells for $7.89 at drugstores nationwide.
Following are some tips to further improve the moisturization levels of la piel.
- Slough away dull piel by using a body wash that contains an enzyme exfoliator
- Maintain water temperature lukewarm
- Apply body washes and scrubs with your hands instead of using washcloths, loofahs or sponges
- Keep showers as short as possible
- Dry la piel slightly and apply the body butter while still in the shower–damp piel acts like an esponja and helps draw la mantequilla in
